What does the computer consist of ?

In order to start basic problem solving for yourself. You need to know some basic ideas about the actual computer and how it all works together.

When most people think of the computer they think of several things.

1. the screen
2. the keyboard
3. the mouse
4. the printer
5. the computer

In fact the box most of us think of as the computer is made up of many different parts. Such as :-

CD / DVD rom drive
Floppy drive
Hard drive
Mother board & actual processor ie Pentium chip etc
Video cards
Modem

And the list goes on. The main part of the computer, the brains if you like are the combination of mother board and CPU. These control all of the other functions.

In order for this to happen the brain of the computer has to communicate with all the separate parts. By communicating with individual parts such as the video card or modem it can send and receive signals and commands in order to create the correct outcome.

If you press a key on the keyboard a signal is sent to the processor which in turn sends a command to the video card which then sends the appropriate letter or symbol to be displayed on the screen. It's a long chain of events and this happens with everything that a computer does. Whether its showing a letter on the screen, printing a letter on the printer or playing a sound through the speakers.

Each individual part talks or communicates with each other part through the central processing unit.
